What Changed Since 2025

Gemini restructured everything (May 2026, Google I/O). The old "Advanced" plan is gone. The ladder is now AI Plus ($7.99), AI Pro ($19.99), AI Ultra ($99.99), and Ultra 20x ($199.99), with compute-based usage limits replacing message counts.

ChatGPT added a budget tier. Go ($8/mo) launched January 2026 — roughly 10x the free tier's message volume, still ad-supported. Plus ($20) and Pro ($100/$200) are unchanged.

Claude kept its ladder but tightened the free tier. Pro is $20 ($17 annually), Max is $100 or $200, and Claude Code is now only in paid plans — the free tier no longer includes it.

ChatGPT — Best All-Around Value

The pitch: The most complete assistant: web search, image generation (GPT Image 2), video (Sora), code (Codex), and agent mode in one subscription.

What it does well:

  • Broadest feature set of the three — you rarely need a second tool
  • Plus at $20 has held its price since February 2023
  • Go at $8 is the cheapest real paid tier of the three

Where it falls short:

  • Free tier has ads (US) and a hard message cap
  • Pro tiers ($100/$200) are priced for power users only

Price: Free (capped, ads) / Go $8/mo / Plus $20/mo / Pro $100–200/mo

Get this if: You want one subscription that covers chat, images, video, and coding.

Skip this if: You live in Google Workspace and want the assistant inside your email and docs.

Claude — Best for Coding and Long-Form Writing

The pitch: The strongest reasoning and writing model of the three, plus Claude Code — an agentic coding tool that writes multi-file changes.

What it does well:

  • Industry-leading coding benchmarks (SWE-bench) and the least "AI-sounding" long-form writing
  • Pro includes Claude Code, which rivals standalone coding tools
  • 1M-token context on Max tiers — entire codebases in one session

Where it falls short:

  • No image/video generation in the consumer app
  • The free tier is now chat-only — no Claude Code
  • Team seats are pricey ($125/seat for the premium tier)

Price: Free (chat only) / Pro $20/mo ($17 annual) / Max $100–200/mo

Get this if: You write code or long documents daily and want the sharpest reasoning.

Skip this if: You need one tool for everything, including image generation.

Gemini — Best for Google Users, Cheapest Entry

The pitch: Native Google Workspace integration — searches your Gmail, Drive, and Calendar — plus the cheapest paid entry of the three.

What it does well:

  • AI Plus at $7.99 is the cheapest paid tier anywhere
  • Deep Workspace integration no competitor matches
  • Ultra tiers bundle YouTube Premium and Google Home perks

Where it falls short:

  • The free tier's compute-based usage limits are confusing (limits refresh every 5 hours)
  • Quality of long-form writing trails Claude
  • The 2026 restructure renamed plans out from under existing subscribers

Price: Free / AI Plus $7.99/mo / AI Pro $19.99/mo / AI Ultra $99.99/mo / Ultra 20x $199.99/mo

Get this if: You live in Google Workspace and want AI inside your existing apps.

Skip this if: Your main use is coding: Claude is stronger for the same money.

The Bottom Line

All three are $20/month at the tier that matters. The difference is what you get for it: pick ChatGPT for breadth, Claude for depth, and Gemini if your life already runs on Google. And since every one of them restructured plans in the last year, check the pricing page before you commit, and look for a verification date on anything claiming to be current.
