Claude can now work inside your Google apps. In August 2026, Anthropic shipped the Gmail, Calendar, and Drive connectors to all Claude users, with a big addition: Claude can now send email on your behalf, not just draft it. The three connectors, in plain terms
Gmail is the biggest addition. Claude can search your mail, read messages, and draft replies, and the August update added the ability to send, reply, and forward, with one critical safeguard: every outgoing action requires your explicit approval in the chat. Claude proposes, you approve, the email goes out. It cannot quietly mail your boss.
Calendar gets the full lifecycle: create events, edit them, cancel them, and read your schedule. Two features earn their keep. Mutual availability, where Claude checks several people's calendars to find a slot everyone has free, and recurring event handling, so a standing meeting can be created or moved without manual repetition.
Drive covers search, reading, uploads, and management: sharing, moving, deleting. Combined with Gmail, that means Claude can read a contract from Drive, summarize it, and draft the reply email in one conversation.
How approval actually works
Every action that sends or changes something external needs your say-so. Anthropic's model is per-action approval: Claude shows you what it is about to do, you confirm in the chat, and only then does it execute. Drafting stays frictionless, sending always asks. For Calendar and Drive, the destructive end of the spectrum, deleting events or files, follows the same approval path.
For Team and Enterprise workspaces, an organization owner has to enable each connector before anyone in the workspace can use it. Connectors are individually toggleable, so a company can allow Calendar but keep Drive off.
The privacy details worth reading twice
Connector data is tied to your chat. Delete the chat, and the associated connector data is deleted with it. There is no separate shadow store you need to hunt down.
Connector data is also not used to train Claude. Your mail and files stay yours.
And answers that draw on your data come with citations, so you can check whether Claude actually read the right document instead of pattern-matching from memory.
What this changes in practice
The workflow that opens up: "Read the contract in Drive, tell me the renewal date, and draft a reply to the client asking for a call next week, checking my calendar first." That is now one conversation instead of five apps. The approval step means the outcome is still yours: Claude drafts and proposes, you fire the final shot.
The limits matter too. Claude reads what your Google account can see, so nothing is shared beyond your existing permissions. Sending always pauses for approval, which makes bulk mail campaigns impractical through this path. And the connectors work on your own stuff, not on scraping the web.
