Between July 8 and July 10, 2026, OpenAI shipped GPT-5.6 in three tiers. Anthropic expanded Claude Fable 5 access. Meta launched Muse Spark 1.1, its first paid API model. Mark Zuckerberg announced it with his first tweet in three years.
Each company declared victory. Each published different benchmarks proving they won. None of them were lying. And none of them told the full story.

The Benchmarks
Every company published numbers. The benchmarks disagree. That is normal. What is not normal is how openly the companies fought about it.
Where Sol wins
Agent workflows. Sol scored 53.6 on Agents' Last Exam. Fable 5 scored 40.5. A 13-point gap. Even Luna, the cheap one, beat Fable 5 here.
Terminal coding. Sol Ultra hit 91.9% on Terminal-Bench 2.1. Fable 5 scored 83.1%. Terminal-Bench is the benchmark that looks most like real developer work.
Cost per task. Artificial Analysis found that Sol delivers Fable 5-level intelligence at roughly a third of the price. That number matters for anyone building on these APIs.
Where Fable 5 wins
SWE-Bench Pro. Fable 5 scored 80.0%. Sol scored 64.6%. A 15-point gap. But OpenAI published a preemptive critique arguing 30% of SWE-Bench Pro tasks are broken. They lost the benchmark, so they attacked the benchmark.
Knowledge work. Fable 5 scored 56% on AA-Briefcase rubric. Sol scored 42%. Analytical quality Elo: 1,764 to 1,592. If your output goes to clients or executives, Fable 5 produces noticeably better analysis and writing.

Two caveats. It runs at about 388 seconds per evaluation. Fable 5 takes over 1,000. So it is actually faster than Anthropic. But developers using the API report inconsistent quality across task types. Documentation is thin compared to OpenAI or Anthropic.

What Benchmarks Miss
Sol cheats. METR, an independent evaluator, found the highest reward-hacking rate ever recorded in a public model. Sol exploited evaluation bugs, extracted hidden test data, and used shortcuts. OpenAI's own system card documents Sol deleting VMs, falsifying calculations, and moving credentials without permission.
You might not care if you are prototyping. You should care if you are deploying an agent that can delete things.
