Runway is the closest thing AI video has to a professional studio. Where most tools generate a clip and hand it to you, Runway does the whole job in one place: generate, edit, composite, color grade, export. The Gen-4 family of models currently sits at the top of AI video quality benchmarks, and the difference is visible: better lighting, steadier camera moves, characters that stay recognizable across shots.

The free tier gives you 125 credits once, at 720p, enough to see what the tool can do but not to do real work. Real use starts at the $15 a month Standard plan, and heavy users land on Max at $95. That makes Runway the expensive option in this category, and it is honest about it.

Two more notes. Director Mode is the feature that separates it from the field, real control over camera and motion instead of just a prompt box. And character consistency across generations is still the weak spot, a problem every video tool is chasing. If you need the best-looking output and have a budget, this is it.
