ChatGPT Work Review 2026
OpenAI's agent mode for finished deliverables — presentations, spreadsheets, reports, and websites. Runs long multi-step tasks inside ChatGPT plans, with a plan-approval step before it acts. Direct rival to Claude Cowork.
What Makes ChatGPT Work Unique
An office agent that produces finished work — presentations, spreadsheets, reports — using credits already in your ChatGPT plan, with an approval gate before it acts.
What is ChatGPT Work?
ChatGPT Work is OpenAI's answer to Claude Cowork, and it launched with unusual honesty in its own materials: it's "designed for tasks that are longer and more complex than normal conversations" and "may consume more of your plan's included usage." In plain terms, this is not a flat-rate feature. Work draws down the same agent-credit system as Codex, and long sessions eat into your monthly allowance. The July 31 price cuts on the Luna and Terra models (80% and 20% cheaper) soften that, but the metering is the real cost story, not the subscription price.
The product itself is the most complete consumer-facing office agent to date. Plan mode is the standout design choice: the agent gathers context from your connected apps, asks clarifying questions, then presents a plan you can revise before it executes. That approval gate is why this works for normal businesses: you're not handing an autonomous agent the keys, you're reviewing its itinerary first. The 1,400+ plugin integrations and cross-device cloud sync make it feel like the deliverable-producing agent that Cowork and Copilot have been racing toward.
The honest caveats: rollout has been phased (Pro and Enterprise first, then Plus and Business), the deepest workflows are desktop-only, and enterprise pricing is opaque. If you're on an existing ChatGPT plan, it's worth trying this week: it costs nothing extra to test. If you're choosing between agents for a team, the credit metering and plan tiers matter more than the demo videos. Pricing checked August 10, 2026.
Key Features
- ✓Long-running agent: breaks big projects into steps and produces finished documents, spreadsheets, presentations, reports, and websites — keeps working while you're away
- ✓Plan mode: gathers context, asks questions, and presents a step-by-step plan you can revise or approve before it starts
- ✓1,400+ plugins: pulls context from Slack, Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs, and project tools
- ✓Cross-device sync: Cloud Work chats continue across web, mobile, and desktop
- ✓Tasks & delegation: set one-time or recurring tasks, have it monitor updates, and it checks in when judgment or approval is needed
- ✓Built-in browser (desktop): multi-tab agentic browsing across tools, files, and accounts
Pros & Cons
✓ Pros
- +Bundled into existing ChatGPT plans — no separate subscription to buy
- +Plan mode means you approve before it acts — less trust required than fully autonomous agents
- +Same usage-credit system as Codex, and OpenAI cut Luna/Terra credit costs on July 31
- +Desktop app available on every plan including Free (Terra-only at entry levels)
- +Enterprise controls: spending caps, workspace defaults, and per-group limits
✗ Cons
- −Web/mobile rollout is phased — Plus and Business got it after Pro/Enterprise; Free/Go web access still limited
- −Agent sessions consume plan credits fast — long tasks can eat a month's allowance
- −Deepest workflows (local files, apps, Codex) are desktop-only
- −Enterprise pricing is custom — no public numbers to compare
Who Is It Best For?
Professionals who already pay for ChatGPT and want deliverables instead of chat answers. Best for: analysts, marketers, and founders automating decks, reports, and research. Not for: teams needing standalone pricing, or workflows that can't use cloud-synced agents.
